Title:
SEISMIC PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT OF EXPANSION JOINTS FOR WATER LIFELINES
Author:
Tomohiro HIGASHIDE1, Takahiro YABUGUCHI2, Toshio IMAI3 and Takeshi KOIKE4

1 Student, Department of Civil Engineering, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, tomohiro.h@ay7.ecs.kyoto-u.ac.jp
2 Engineer, Water Pipeline Division, JFE Engineering Co., Yokohama, Japan,
yabuguchi-takahiro@jfe-eng.co.jp

4 Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan,
koike.takeshi.7n@kyoto-u.ac.jp

Key facts:

Hazard Type: Earthquake
Date of the disaster : March 11, 2011
Location of the survey: Shiroishi Interchange, Miyagi Prefecture(38.039N, 140.63E)
Date of the field survey (if any) : May 29-30, 2011
Survey tools (if any) : none

Key findings:

1) Expansion joint failures of large-diameter buried pipelines of 1200mm and 2400mm water mains.
2) The failure mechanism of these joints are investigated based on numerical analyses and field survey results.
3) The expansion joints which were vertically settled before the main shock, have reduced deformation allowances for the seismic responses

Key Words:

Great East Japan Earthquake, expansion joint, pipeline, riser, seismic design
