(1)Introduction
Manuscripts (PDF files) submitted to the Journal of the JSCE are published on the "Japanese Science Technology Information Aggregator, Electronic" (hereafter J-STAGE), which is operated by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Therefore the uploaded PDF files need to be readable regardless of the environment (Windows, macOS, and so on) they are viewed in. The Editorial Committee on Journal of JSCE therefore asks authors to embed all fonts in their papers when converting to PDF. Please refer to the method for preparing PDF files shown below.
(2)Method of preparing PDF files
First, the layout of text and images (figures, tables, photographs, etc.) is arranged in the software used to prepare the manuscript. Please follow the Journal of JSCE Guidelines for Authors and the example of manuscript preparation in preparing the manuscript.
When the manuscript has been prepared, configure the output using the PDF conversion software and convert the manuscript to PDF. Please make sure to embed the fonts when preparing the manuscript.
The size of the prepared PDF file must not exceed 10 MB.
Color figures and color photographs are acceptable. Recommended resolutions are 1200 dpi for monochrome images and 300 dpi for color and grayscale images. Please take care, since setting the resolution high results in a large file size, and that can interfere with reading over the internet.
Page numbers and so on will be inserted at JSCE after publication has been decided, so please do not apply password or other such security protection to the manuscript. Under permissions or restrictions, please allow the document to be printed, allow text and graphics to be copied, allow the document to be modified, allow adding and modifying comments and form fields, and so on. Also, please do not insert bookmarks, thumbnails, or external links (to web pages, email, and so on). However, you are free to set links within the PDF file.
When preparation of the PDF file is complete, check the file on the screen and also print it out on paper in order to compare the printed image with the original manuscript and make sure there are no differences between them.
In preparing the PDF file, please use software that is capable of preparing the file under conditions that satisfy points 1 through 6 above.
(3)Items to check in PDF file (when submitting)
After preparing the PDF file, please be certain to check the following items without fail.
Are the fonts all embedded?
(When fonts are not all embedded, the file may not display properly in other environments (with other operating systems, software versions, and so on).)
Is the PDF file size 10 MB or less?
(The upper limit on file size is 10 MB. Submissions with file size larger than that will not be accepted.)
Is the number of pages in the PDF file within the limit of 20 pages (6 pages in the case of technical notes)?
(Please take care on this point, because a document may go beyond the 20-page limit (6 pages in the case of technical notes) when converted to a PDF file.)
Did you check that the file doesn’t have security restrictions, bookmarks, thumbnails, or external links?
(If any of these are set, then the final manuscript cannot be uploaded to J- STAGE.)
Did you try printing the file to check it?
(Please print the file and recheck the fonts, layout, image quality, and so on.)
The following item is to be checked only if you have the capability, so please try checking it only if you are able to.
Does the PDF file open normally on other types of computer (if converted on Windows, does it open on MacOS, and if converted on MacOS, does it open on Windows)?
